I don't get it. What exactly is POP3 and SMTP?

POP3 is for Receiving - a standard that allows you to retrieve your mail with different programs. There are many other uses for POP3, including receiving mail notifications and setting up programs to process and filter your mail.

SMTP is for Sending - SMTP is used to send outgoing mail (such as replies). For example, some AOL users that sell goods on eBay use auction management software that can track auctions and send out mail notifications. Without SMTP, this would not be possible.  eMail2Pop creates a SMTP interface for AOL and Gmail mail and allows software using the SMTP protocol to send out mail .
